Against the Dark style games are ones where things may be dark and evil, but the protagonists are banded together fighting for a better world.
This is different from grimdark settings like Game of Thrones, where all is bleak and heroes always fail. Here, the heroes have a chance to make things better, and they often do, even if it is in little victories. There may be no grand gestures like throwing the evil ones’ ring in a volcano (or there may be), but instead it focuses on everyday people fighting for others, even if it seems insurmountable.
